Museum

The beautiful Kazantzakis Museum is situated in the village of Varvari, which in 1971 changed its name to Myrtia. The village is 20 km south of Iraklion in the middle of the extensive vineyards in the district of Peza.

The museum was opened in the summer of 1983 by its founder Giorgos Anemogiannis, who tells us the following about its creation:

In his will Nikos Kazantzakis expressed a wish for his books and personal belongings to be displayed in his childhood home in Iraklion, but the outcome was only a smaller room in the Historical Museum of Iraklion.

I thought that such a great personality needed a museum of his own. When I got the ownership of a two-storey house, which had belonged to my family until it was sold to some Turks in 1831, and when the local authorities offered me some square metres of the adjoining house, which had belonged to Captain Michalis, Nikos Kazantzakis' father, and I was financially supported by the Greek government, I started the museum.

It was a time-consuming job to collect manuscripts, letters, first editions of his books, documentation of theatrical performances, films and television programmes about and of his publications, pictures, busts and cuttings from the world press for an archive, where researchers can gather information.
