Charcoal stacks

One of the big areas for production of charcoal lies south east of Rethymno near the village of Agiá.

The stacks in the area are quite big, and therefore big amounts of olive and carob wood have to be carried from far away.

A stack is built up by placing big half burnt logs on the ground. Above these new logs are placed followed by smaller and smaller branches. The about 2 m high construction is covered with olive twigs with their leaves on, and finally the stack is closed with a layer of earth. In the top there is a hole, through which the stack is set on fire and then smoulders for 15-20 days.

From one stack you get 10-12 tonnes of charcoal, which is used in the local market and exported to other parts of Greece.
