Trades and industries

The population in the bigger towns is mainly employed with service trades, industry and tourism, which for the past 20 years has developed into a leading part of the islandīs economy.

The rural population is mainly employed with the growth of different crops such as olives, grapes, tomatoes and other vegetables. Especially in the southern part of Crete there are large areas with greenhouses, where an intensive production of vegetables takes place.

Big flocks of sheep and goats are grazing in the mountain areas in summer. In winter they are taken to lower areas. The shepherds are motorized by now and they only rarely stay with the animals in the mountains.

In the towns along the sea many people are also occupied by fishing.

Even though people have a main occupation it is a common practice to have a small piece of land with olives too, for personal use or for farming out.

Many women are still occupied at home weaving, sewing and embroidering - often for the tourism industry.

Equally the ancient pottery goes on but like the women's occupation it is a question of production for the tourism. The Cretans meet their own needs for various containers with plastic articles.
