The
Zoures cave
Immediately
before the village, a road to the left leads up to the Zoures cave,
situated in an altitude of 535 m. As the road has quite a steep ascent of
almost 200 m, its standard is as might be expected. Shortly before the
vertical upper rock wall, the road ends, and now you must look for a white
cross on the top and walk towards it. When you have passed trough a narrow
crevice in the rock, you find yourself in an open "cave"
surrounded by vertical rocks. Here is the entrance to the cave, which you
may climb down into by four iron ladders. (A really good torch is
recommended.)

St.
John's cave
In
order to reach the cave, where John the Hermit lived, you must pass
through the village and follow the road to the left. Behind the building
with rooms for rent you find the cave and a little church.

From
the photo
you see the incredibly beautiful view that John had down towards the sea
and the tongue of land, where Palaiochora is now situated.

The
evergreen plane tree and Moni Agion Pateron
You
find one of nature's whims in the valley, where a plane tree, which is
always green, is growing. If you go on a little further and pass the
running watercourse, you reach the church to the Holy Fathers (which has
its church festival on October 7th)
and a small museum with photos of local military people etc.

The
church is of a more recent date, because the old church built by John the
Hermit, was destroyed during the rebellion in 1866.

The
Charakas caves
In
order to reach the Charakas caves you must turn right by the first road
after the village. After about 1 km you must watch out for a gravel road
to the right, which leads you directly down to the caves 300 m further on.
The
caves are situated in the almost vertical rock wall, and a rickety ladder
leads up to the upper one, in an altitude of about 20 m.
