Gramvousa

The Gramvousa peninsula is uninhabited because of its rocky and rough terrain and its high mountains (713 m).

A rather poor and stony gravel-road leads into the peninsula from the village of Kalyviani. From the road you have a magnificent view of Rodopos, the other peninsula of the area, and through a small binocular you can see many details of Rodopos' steep west coast.

The road ends in a parking ground with a primitive café, where goats go freely among the tables - in this connection I would recommend that you keep an eagle eye on your Greek salad, as it is a favourite dish of the goats.

A path leads towards the Balos bay from the parking ground.

After the flat plain, begins the steep descent to the beach.

There is a fabulous view over the tempting beach and the incredible Tigani rock from the path.

Three kilometres to the north lies the Imeri Gramvousa island with its old Venetian castle, and you also see the Agria Gramvousa even further away.

From the harbour west of Kissamos are several daily boat trips to Imeri Gramvousa and Balos bay.
