The Amari Valley - Nefs Amari |
On the western side of the fertile Amari valley is the old village of Nefs Amari.
At the entrance of the village is the Agia Anna church, where an inscription shows that it was built in the year 6733. This date corresponds to 1225 AD, but at that time the orthodox church used another calendar taking point of reference in the creation of the world in the year 5508 BC.
During the Turkish period the village was the capital of the area, which the name of the village also indicates, as the word Nefs means beautiful in Turkish.
There is a fabulous view over the valley and the roofs of the village from the unusual bell tower.
The village also has a small collection of old domestic utensils and agricultural tools.
Near the village is the old Kera Panagia monastery from the end of the Venetian period, but admission is unfortunately not allowed because of the collapse risk.
