Rakí
or
tsikoudiá,
as
it is also called in Cretan, has always been not only a pleasant but also
a necessary and handy ingredient in everyday life. Most people probably
know the inspiring effect, but in addition to that raki was used as a
healing medicine for external use at common-cold symptoms - especially protoráki
which is the first liter of a distillation, and which is considerably
stronger than the rest. It is also still a splendid disinfectant for the
cleaning of wounds. It has moreover been used as a binding material fixing
the gold leaf to the icons, because raki evaporates easily and leaves only
the sticky sweet stuff behind.
